Know as jeans guru, Renzo Rosso co-founded Italian design company Diesel 35 years ago, at the age of 23. He owns 100% of the company that has evolved from a jeans seller to a much broader lifestyle brand with revenues of $2 billion in 2012. In the last decade Rosso, through a holding company called Only The Brave, was snapping up major shares in small, upmarket fashion houses all across Europe: Paris-based Maison Martin Margiela, Amsterdam's Viktor & Rolf, and this past December, Milanese label Marni. Apart from expanding his clothing business, Rosso also invests in tech start-ups including Nonabox, a Birchbox for pregnant women. Furthermore, he is an avid snowboarder and guitar player who owns South Beach design hotel The Pelican as well as a winery near his northern Italian home.
Renzo Rosso (born 15 September 1955 Brugine, Padova, North East Italy) is an Italian fashion entrepreneur. Referred to as the "Jeans Genius" by Suzy Menkes, he is the President of OTB, the holding group of Maison Martin Margiela, Marni, Viktor & Rolf, Diesel & Staff International (manufacturer and distributor of DSquared2, Just Cavalli, Vivienne Westwood, and Marc Jacobs Men) and the founder of the holding group's not-for-profit organization, the Only The Brave Foundation. Rosso is also the President of the Red Circle investment group; the Diesel Farm in Marostica, Veneto; the Pelican hotel in Miami; and Bassano Virtus 55 S.T., the professional soccer club of his hometown Bassano del Grappa, Veneto.
Rosso was born in the village of Brugine in the Northeastern Italian region of Veneto. His parents were farmers and he grew up under simple conditions, regularly helping his father after school. Having seen the laborious life required for a farmer, Rosso aspired to do something different from his parents and in 1970 began studying industrial Textile Manufacturing at the Marconi Technical Institute in Padua. There, he produced, at the age of 15, his first self-designed garment, a pair of low-waist bell-bottomed jeans using his mother's Singer sewing machine. He kept experimenting with different jeans models and would give each pair to friends or sell them at school for about 3500 lire (equivalent of 1,80 Euro in current prices). In 1973 he began studying Economics at the University of Venice, where in addition to helping his father on the farm, he also financed his studies by working as a mechanic and as a carpenter. Created 'Goldie' label which Katharine Hamnett designed a collection for, before launching DIESEL.
