He struggled academically and socially due to the language barrier, but subsequently found himself in athletics. At the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, he won silver in the 10,000 m and gold in the 5000 m. He became double Olympic champion at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, taking gold in both the 5000 and 10,000 metres. In 2013, he also won the double at the 14th IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, taking gold in both the 5000 and 10,000 metres, becoming only the second man in history to win a double victory in both the Olympics and World Championships in the distance events.
