Jim Calhoun Salary Jim Calhoun's annual salary is $1.6 million. He is the coach of the University of Connecticut men's basketball team. Jim Calhoun is the head coach of the men's basketball team at the University of Connecticut, and has a net worth of $8 million. Jim Calhoun has earned his net worth through his coaching career at Lyme-Old Lyme High School, and afterwards moved on to Westport High School in Massachusetts, and after one season, moved on to Dedham High School for one season, helping them to win the Massachusetts High School Bay State Championship. In 1971, Calhoun was recruited to be the new head coach at the Northeastern University in Boston and advanced his team from Division II to Division I four times. He was given six regional Coach of theYear Awards from Northeastern and is ranked as the coach with the most wins, with a record of 245-138. He was also the head coach at the University of Connecticut in 1986, and led the Huskies to win the NIT championship, as well as, the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. He has led the University of Connecticut to win many championships and to also win seven Big East Men's Basketball Tournament Championships. He received his 700th win at Gampel Pavilion. In the history of the NCAA, Calhoun was the first coach to have won at least 240 games in two schools that were both division I. He was inducted into the Dr. James Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, and has recently signed a five year contract until 2014. His contract is for $16 million. Calhoun is such a successful head coach that 23 of his players have gone on to the professional leagues. But Calhoun ended up being suspended for the first three Big East Games of 2011-2012 and the University of Connecticut suffered a reduction of scholarships for three academic years, as well as, restrictions on recruiting, three year probations and there was to be no connection or involvement with a booster, no contributions, assisting with recruiting or any form of benefits or privileges. He went to American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts and received another scholarship for basketball. He earned a Bachelors Degree in sociology in 1968. He has a wife, Pat, and two sons and six grandchildren. They reside in Pomfret, Connecticut and Long Island South, in Madison, Connecticut. Jim Calhoun and his wife Pat, founded the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Research Fund, in honor of their parents who were lost to heart disease. They have also raised almost $1 million, through the Jim Calhoun Annual Food Drive, to help food assistance agencies provide for families in need. They are also involved in several benefits for causes such as Cancer and Diabetes. His teams have won three national championships (1999, 2004, 2011), played in four Final Fours (most recently in 2011), won the 1988 NIT championship, and have won seven Big East tournament championships (in 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2011). In 2005 he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. On Feb. 25, 2009, Jim Calhoun won his 800th game when Connecticut beat Marquette, 93-82. On April 4, 2011, Calhoun won his third NCAA Men's Championship as the Connecticut Huskies defeated the Butler Bulldogs 53-41. The victory over Butler made Calhoun, at 68, the oldest coach to win an NCAA Division I men's basketball title.
A self-described Irish Catholic, Calhoun was born and raised in Braintree, Massachusetts, where he was a standout on the basketball, football, and baseball teams at Braintree High School. After his father died of a heart attack when Calhoun was 15, he was left to watch over his large family that included five siblings.
Although he received a basketball scholarship to Lowell State (now UMass Lowell), he only attended the school for three months after which he returned home to help support his mother and siblings. He worked as a granite cutter, headstone engraver, scrapyard worker, shampoo factory worker, and gravedigger.
After a 20-month leave from higher education, Calhoun returned to college, this time at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he was given another basketball scholarship. He was the leading scorer on the team his junior and senior seasons, and captained the team in his final year, during which AIC advanced to the Division II playoffs. At the time he graduated, he was ranked as the fourth all-time scorer at AIC. Calhoun graduated in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in sociology.
