Formula E race car series is coming to Los Angeles

Earth Day and motorsports don’t typically go together, but that was the case on Monday when FIA Formula E announced Los Angeles as the 10th host city for the all-electric race series. Set to launch in 2014, the Formula E World Championship will also include races in Miami, London, Rome, Beijing, Putrajaya, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janiero, and two locations yet to be announced.

A street course through downtown Los Angeles is being planned for the race, “although a number of routes are still being considered,” according to Formula E. The emissions-free races are planned to be roughly 1 hour in length and feature speeds in excess of 140 miles per hour.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was on hand for the announcement and took the opprotunity to pose for photos with a Formula E open-wheel racer.

“By selecting Los Angeles as the site of their Championship races, Formula E Holdings brings international attention to our City’s electric vehicle infrastructure programs and increased tourism revenue to our City,” Villaraigosa said in a statement.

Former Formula 1 driver Lucas di Grassi was also standing by to showcase the EV race car in action. Witness some electric-powered doughnuts in the video below.

Mayor Villaraigosa Welcomes Formula E Electric Car Racing to Los Angeles on Earth DayCrowds treated to street demonstration of all-electric race car to celebrate the City playing host to world’s first fully-electric race in 2014

LOS ANGELES (April 22, 2013) – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa officially welcomed the FIA Formula E Championship to Los Angeles today, on Earth Day, becoming one of 10 global cities to host the world’s first fully-electric Formula E race, commencing in 2014. Formula E is a new FIA championship that brings electric vehicle racing to the people, as city centres around the world play host to an electric energy World Championship designed to promote interest and investment in electric vehicles and sustainable motoring.

Los Angeles was selected to host one of the races by Championship promoters Formula E Holdings in part due to its robust and burgeoning electric vehicle infrastructure, in particular Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP) Electric Vehicle Program. Additional cities already chosen to host races include Miami; London and Rome in Europe; Beijing and Putrajaya in Asia; and, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janiero in South America, with two locations to be announced.
